FY 2006 Conservation Security Program

The Oklahoma portion of the Spring River Watershed is in the northeast corner of Ottawa County and contains approximately 218 farms. Major agriculture enterprises include livestock grazing of introduced forages and native range with poultry and dairy operations scattered throughout the watershed. Cropland agriculture in the watershed consists of corn, soybeans, wheat, milo and a few specialty crops.  Cropland conservation practices include no-till operations that incorporate herbicide resistant varieties, reduced tillage, terracing, and grassed waterways for concentrated flows. Grazing land practices include prescribed grazing, water development, cross fencing, pasture fertilization, brush management, waste utilization, nutrient management, and pest management for weeds. EPA 319 work will start in the watershed around the Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees area in the Fall of 2005 or Spring of 2006. The Spring River drains into Grand Lake which is a source of electricity, flood control structure, and extremely important for recreational and tourism purposes, therefore water quality is an evident concern.
