FY 2006 Conservation Security Program
The watershed contains 1559 farms and lies in east central Oklahoma and western Arkansas.
Major agriculture enterprises include livestock grazing, hay production, poultry and
swine operations and crop production. Cropland occurs along the
bottomlands adjacent to the Poteau River. Soybeans, wheat and corn are the
major crops grown. Cropland practices include conservation tillage and
conservation cropping systems. Grazing land practices include prescribed
grazing, cross fencing, water development, brush management, nutrient
management, pest management for weeds and heavy use area protection. Hay
land practices include forage harvest management and nutrient management.
Poultry and swine operation practices include waste utilization, nutrient
management, waste storage facilities and composting facilities. The
majority of pasture in the watershed is former cropland that has been converted
to introduced grasses. The poultry and swine operations are located throughout
the watershed.
