Lower Neosho River Watershed

The information on this page and related links may not be current and are for archival purposes only.

FY 2005 Conservation Security Program

The watershed contains 4,354 farms and lies in northeastern Oklahoma with 95% of the watershed in Oklahoma.  Five percent of the watershed (Spavinaw Creek) lies in Arkansas.  Arkansas has agreed to this priority watershed selection.  Major agriculture enterprises include livestock grazing of introduced forages and native range, poultry production is concentrated in the Spavinaw Creek tributary to the watershed, and swine and dairy production are in localized within areas of the watershed in both Oklahoma and Arkansas.  Cropland agriculture comprises a smaller portion of the watershed enterprises with wheat, soybeans, corn and a few specialty crops.     Cropland conservation practices include reduced tillage and no-till, and grassed waterways for concentrated flow.  Grazing land practices include prescribed grazing, water development, cross fencing, pasture fertilization, brush management, waste utilization, nutrient management, and pest management for weeds. There is accelerated waste management and nutrient management planning activity by NRCS, active EPA 319 work within the watershed, as well as priority delivery of EQIP to address animal waste management and related significant natural resource issues within the watershed.  Portions of the watershed serve as a public water supply for the City of Tulsa.  There continues to be significant controversy over the impacts of animal waste application and phosphorus impacts in the watershed.
